Failsworth lies in the borough of Oldham, between central Manchester and Oldham itself. Its shape comes largely from two routes. Oldham Road runs through the town from south-west to north-east, and the Rochdale Canal follows a similar line close by. Houses and former industrial sites line both.
The streets away from the main road are dense terraces and later estates, built when the town's mills and hat-making drew workers in. The Failsworth Pole, a landmark that has been rebuilt several times, stands on Oldham Road and marks the traditional centre. To the south the River Medlock valley forms a greener boundary.
