Fogo Map Poster & Print
Fogo, whose name means fire, is one of the southern islands of Cabo Verde and is almost entirely a single volcano. From above it looks nearly circular, with roads running around the lower slopes and villages spread along them. The upper slopes rise steeply toward the summit, and the interior of the map is dominated by a great caldera.
Inside the caldera, the flat floor of Chã das Caldeiras holds a small farming community and vineyards, set below the cone of Pico do Fogo, which at 2,829 metres is the highest point in Cabo Verde. An eruption in 2014 and 2015 buried much of the settlement under lava, yet many residents returned. A single road climbs into the caldera from the coast.
São Filipe, on the west coast, is the island's main town, known for its colonial houses set on a cliff above a black sand beach.
