Folsom Map Poster & Print
Folsom lies in the foothills east of Sacramento, and water organises its map. Folsom Lake spreads its irregular arms to the north, held back by Folsom Dam, and below it the American River continues as Lake Natoma, a narrow reservoir that curls past the historic town. Residential streets fan out on both sides, with U.S. Route 50 crossing the south of the city.
The town grew during the California Gold Rush, and its historic district around Sutter Street keeps the scale of that era. Folsom is also known for Folsom State Prison, made famous far beyond California by Johnny Cash, who recorded his live album there in 1968. The dam, completed in the 1950s, turned the river valley into the lake that now defines the area.
