Framingham lies in the MetroWest region of Massachusetts, about twenty miles west of Boston. On a map water is everywhere. The Sudbury River and a chain of reservoirs run through the southern part of the city, and Lake Cochituate stretches along its eastern edge. The Massachusetts Turnpike crosses the north side, and the commuter rail line runs through the downtown.
The town adopted a city form of government in 2018, after more than three centuries as a New England town. Framingham State University is located here, and the course of the Boston Marathon passes through the city along Route 135 on its way from Hopkinton to Boston.
