Fuqing is a county-level city under Fuzhou in Fujian province, on the coast of the Taiwan Strait. Its urban core sits on a river plain crossed by the Longjiang River, with hills rising behind it and the land breaking up to the east and south into bays, inlets, reclaimed flats and offshore islands.
The area is known as a hometown of many overseas Chinese, with emigrant families spread across Southeast Asia, Japan and beyond. In the hills nearby stands Wanfu Temple on Mount Huangbo, whose monk Yinyuan founded the Ōbaku school of Zen in Japan in the seventeenth century.
