Ying River
The river enters from the north-west and bends through the urban area. It is the one strong curve in an otherwise rectilinear plan, lined by embankment roads and green space.

Fuyang Map Poster & Print
Fuyang stands on the Huang-Huai plain in north-western Anhui, one of the most level landscapes in China. With almost no hills to bend them, its roads run long and straight, and on a map the urban area reads as a set of large rectangular blocks. The Ying River, the largest tributary of the Huai, winds through the city and provides the main curve in the composition.
The city has long been a regional crossroads and is now an important rail junction. Its historic name, Yingzhou, survives in the Yingzhou West Lake. This scenic area is associated with the Song-dynasty writers Ouyang Xiu and Su Shi, both of whom served as officials here.
A Fuyang map poster captures the plain at its most typical. A city grid meets a patchwork of fields, straight canals and village clusters, with the river threading between them. Because the land is so flat, water and roads carry all of the visual weight, which gives the print a calm, measured quality.

Grid of the plain
Straight arterial roads and wide blocks divide the newer districts evenly. The flat terrain allows this pattern to extend in every direction.
Canals and fields
At the edges of the map, irrigation channels and field boundaries carry the geometry of the city into the surrounding countryside, ending in scattered villages.

Many people from Fuyang work in other cities, and a map of home carries real weight for them. The plain, the river and the street grid are familiar at a glance, which makes the poster a thoughtful gift for someone living far from Anhui.
