Garston sits on the north bank of the Mersey in south Liverpool, between Aigburth and Speke. The map is shaped by the docks. Garston was once a separate village and grew into a busy port in the nineteenth century, when railway companies built docks here to ship coal and goods. The docks are still in use, and their basins are a distinctive part of the south Liverpool shoreline.
