Geldern Map Poster & Print
Geldern lies on the Lower Rhine plain near the Dutch border, in the district of Kleve. From above, its old centre forms a rounded, compact core, and the streets around it trace the line of the town's former fortifications. Residential neighbourhoods spread outward beyond that ring, and then the land opens into a flat, carefully divided countryside of fields, hedges and scattered farmsteads.
The town gave its name to the historic County, later Duchy, of Guelders, and through it to the Dutch province of Gelderland. A local legend explains the name with a dragon whose dying cry sounded like Gelre. The small river Niers flows past the town, one of several quiet watercourses crossing this low, green landscape.
