The Rhine-Herne Canal crosses the north of the city from east to west, with harbour basins along its banks. The Emscher river runs nearby. The city was once one of Europe's largest coal-mining centres, and was sometimes called the city of a thousand fires. Many former colliery sites have since been turned into parks and business areas.
