Görogly lies in Daşoguz Province in the north of Turkmenistan, in the lowlands of the lower Amu Darya. This is irrigated country. On the map, the town is surrounded by a fine mesh of canals, ditches and rectangular fields stretching toward the horizon, while its own streets are laid out in a fairly regular pattern of low-rise blocks.
The town takes its name from Görogly, hero of an epic told across Central Asia, the Caucasus and Anatolia and honoured in Turkmenistan as a national figure. Away from the canals, the cultivated land gives way to the dry expanses that border the oasis, so the settlement reads as a clearly defined island of activity.
