Gongtan Map Poster & Print
Gongtan is a town in Youyang County, in the mountainous south-east of Chongqing Municipality, on the banks of the Wu River. From above, the setting is dramatic: steep, forested slopes rise on both sides of the river, leaving only narrow bands of flatter ground for streets and buildings.
The town is known for its old quarter, a river port with stone-paved lanes and traditional wooden houses, some built on stilts. When a hydropower project raised the level of the Wu River, the old town was relocated and reconstructed on higher ground. On the map, the settlement follows the river closely, stretching along its bank rather than spreading inland.
