Gōtsuchō Map Poster & Print
Gōtsu lies on the coast of western Shimane Prefecture, where the Gō River flows into the Sea of Japan. The Gō is the longest river in the Chūgoku region, and it dominates the map. A broad channel curves down from the mountains, and the town's streets gather on its banks near the mouth.
Behind the narrow coastal strip, forested hills rise steeply, so the town is squeezed into the flat land along the river and the shore. The San'in Main Line follows the coast through the town. Until 2018 the Sankō Line also ran inland along the river valley toward Hiroshima Prefecture.
The area is known for Sekishū roof tiles, which are glazed a distinctive red-brown and seen on houses across the region.
