Gümüşhane lies in northeastern Turkey, in the mountains between the Black Sea coast and the eastern Anatolian plateau. The town follows the narrow valley of the Harşit river, and on a map it forms a long, thin shape: streets run parallel to the water, with the slopes rising sharply on both sides. There is little room to spread, so the town extends along the valley floor.
The name means silver house, a reference to the silver mines that made the area important in Ottoman times. The old town once stood higher on the mountainside and was later moved down to the valley. Gümüşhane is also known for its pestil and köme, fruit and nut specialities made from the mulberries and walnuts grown in the region.
