Guérande lies on the Atlantic coast of Loire-Atlantique, just inland from La Baule. From above, its historic centre is unmistakable: a compact oval of streets enclosed by a complete ring of medieval ramparts, with gates and towers still in place. Outside the walls a boulevard follows the old moat line, and later neighbourhoods spread beyond it.
To the west, the land drops to the salt marshes of the Guérande peninsula, where salt has been gathered for centuries. On a map the marshes form an extraordinary pattern of small, geometric ponds and channels, and the fleur de sel harvested there has made the town's name familiar far beyond France.
