Halesowen lies on the southwestern edge of the West Midlands conurbation, where the urban area of the Black Country meets rising countryside. The town has a long industrial past, including nail-making and metalworking. It is also known for The Leasowes, an eighteenth-century landscaped park created by the poet William Shenstone, and for the ruins of Halesowen Abbey, founded in the thirteenth century.
