Hanau lies on the Main just east of Frankfurt, where the Kinzig flows into it. Its map shows two distinct towns fused together. The old town is irregular and medieval, while next to it lies the Neustadt, a planned new town founded in 1597 for Protestant refugees from the Low Countries and laid out on a remarkably regular grid.
Hanau is the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm, and a monument to them stands in front of the town hall on the Marktplatz. The city marks the start of the German Fairy Tale Route. West of the centre, on the Main, Philippsruhe Palace stands in its park, and the river gives the city a broad, curving edge.
