Harpenden Map Poster & Print
Harpenden grew along the old road through the Lea valley in Hertfordshire, and its long high street is still the backbone of the map. Shops and houses line the road for a good distance before the town widens into leafy residential streets on either side. The railway line to London runs down the eastern side, and the station is a large part of why the town expanded as a commuter settlement.
Open space is one of the defining features. Harpenden Common stretches south from the centre as a broad area of grass and woodland. It leaves a large, irregular gap in the street pattern that most towns of this size would have built over. To the west lie the fields of Rothamsted Research, founded in 1843 and among the oldest agricultural research stations in the world.
