Hatfield in Hertfordshire has two distinct characters, and the map shows both. Old Hatfield sits on a small hill beside the park of Hatfield House, the Jacobean home of the Cecil family, where the grounds also hold the older palace in which the young Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood. Its narrow streets contrast with everything around them.
The larger part of the town is a post-war new town, planned with neighbourhoods, a town centre and curving residential roads. To the west lie the campuses of the University of Hertfordshire, partly on land once used by the de Havilland aircraft works. The A1(M) runs through the town, partly in a tunnel, and the East Coast Main Line passes close to the old centre.
