Havlíčkův Brod sits on the River Sázava in the Vysočina region of the Czech Republic, in the hilly country of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. The historic centre stands on higher ground above the river. It is organised around a large elongated square, while later districts, railway yards and industrial areas spread out around it.
The town was long known as Německý Brod. In 1945 it was renamed after Karel Havlíček Borovský, the nineteenth-century Czech journalist and writer who spent his youth here. The main square bears his name. The town also developed as an important railway junction, which is still clear on the map.
