Hazleton sits high on a plateau in southern Luzerne County, among the highest cities in Pennsylvania. It grew in the nineteenth century as a centre of anthracite coal mining, drawing workers from across Europe. On the map the city is a tight, regular grid of streets centred on Broad Street, surrounded by patchy land shaped by former strip mines, woodland and small mining villages.
Its population has changed repeatedly. Welsh, Irish, Italian and Slavic communities shaped the city in the mining era, and since the early 2000s a large Dominican and wider Latino community has made Hazleton one of the most notably transformed small cities in the state. Nearby, Interstates 80 and 81 meet, and warehouses and industrial parks have grown along them.
