Hechingen Map Poster & Print
Hechingen climbs a slope above the Starzel valley at the edge of the Swabian Jura. Its old centre sits on higher ground, with streets curving down toward the river and newer districts spreading across the valley floor. From above, the town has a compact heart and looser edges, and wooded hills close in from the south.
The town was once the seat of the princes of Hohenzollern-Hechingen, and their buildings still shape the centre. Just to the south stands Mount Hohenzollern, crowned by Hohenzollern Castle. The castle is the ancestral seat of the dynasty that later ruled Prussia and the German Empire, and it is one of the most visited castles in Germany. Its silhouette is visible from much of the town.
