Himatnagar is the headquarters of Sabarkantha district in northern Gujarat, and its map is shaped by the Hathmati river flowing past the town. The older streets gather near the river in a dense, irregular pattern, while newer residential areas and main roads spread outward across the flat land, giving the town a clear distinction between its historic core and later growth.
The town was founded in the fifteenth century as Ahmednagar and later renamed after Maharaja Himmatsinhji of Idar. Today it is a busy commercial and administrative centre, and major roads linking Ahmedabad with Rajasthan pass through the area, appearing on the map as long, strong lines running across the plain.
