Holzminden Map Poster & Print
Holzminden lies on the Weser in the south of Lower Saxony, close to the border with North Rhine-Westphalia. The town occupies the east bank of the river, with the forested Solling uplands stretching away to the east. On a map the Weser forms a smooth curve along its western edge, and the streets fan out from the river toward the hills.
The town is closely associated with the fragrance and flavour industry. It was here, in the nineteenth century, that synthetic vanillin was first produced commercially, and the company that grew from that work is now part of Symrise, which remains a major employer. Holzminden often presents itself as a town of fragrances.
The layout combines a compact historic core near the river with later residential areas and industrial sites.
