Hunedoara lies in western Romania, in a valley in the hills of southern Transylvania. The Cerna and Zlaști rivers meet near the town. From above, the older centre sits close to the rivers, and apartment blocks from the socialist period spread out around it. A large area once taken up by the steel works covers much of the valley floor.
The town is known above all for Corvin Castle, a large Gothic castle built on a rock outcrop above the Zlaști stream. It is one of the largest castles in Romania and a well-known image of Transylvania. For much of the twentieth century, Hunedoara was also one of the country's main steel-making centres.
