Ijuí sits on the planalto of north-western Rio Grande do Sul, a region of broad, gently rolling farmland. The town grew out of a colony founded at the end of the nineteenth century, when settlers from many parts of Europe arrived to work the land, and that mixed origin is still part of the local identity.
