Irauçuba lies in the semi-arid interior of Ceará, west of Fortaleza on the highway toward the Sobral region. The town is compact, with a small grid of streets, a central square and houses spreading out along the main road. Beyond the last blocks the land opens into caatinga, the thorny dry woodland of north-eastern Brazil.
The landscape around Irauçuba is well known to geologists for its inselbergs, the granite domes and hills that rise abruptly from the flat plain. The area is also often cited in Brazilian research on desertification. Its thin soils and long dry seasons make it a reference point for studies of land degradation and recovery in the sertão.
