Istra Map Poster & Print
Istra sits on the river of the same name, about 50 kilometres west of Moscow. On the map, the river loops through the town in soft bends, with wooded banks on either side and the streets arranged along the higher ground. To the north, the Istra Reservoir spreads across the landscape in long, branching arms, one of the largest water shapes in the area around Moscow.
The town grew up around the New Jerusalem Monastery, founded in the seventeenth century by Patriarch Nikon, who meant it to represent the holy sites of Jerusalem. Until 1930 the town was called Voskresensk. The monastery grounds stand out on the map as a walled enclosure on a bend of the river, surrounded by open space and paths.
Beyond the centre, Istra shades into forest, dachas and villages linked by winding roads, while the Volokolamsk highway and the railway line pass through as straighter routes. An Istra map poster shows the river, the monastery, the town and the woods in one balanced composition.
