Jaffna Map Poster & Print
Jaffna is the main city of Sri Lanka's Northern Province and the cultural centre of the island's Tamil population. It lies on a flat, low peninsula, and on a map water surrounds it on almost every side. The Jaffna Lagoon runs along its southern edge, and long causeways cross the shallow water to the islands farther west.
Beside the lagoon is the city's most recognisable feature: a star-shaped fort, first built by the Portuguese and then rebuilt by the Dutch in the seventeenth century. Its angular outline stands out clearly on the map. Inland, the Nallur Kandaswamy temple is the centre of a major annual festival, and the rebuilt Jaffna Public Library is an important symbol for the city.
