Jingui lies on the Yinchuan Plain in Ningxia, a flat strip of land between the Helan Mountains to the west and the Yellow River to the east. The whole area depends on irrigation. From above, the dominant pattern is made of straight canals, drainage ditches and long rectangular fields, with settlements set among them.
The irrigation network on this plain goes back many centuries, and its main channels still decide where roads and villages run. Streets and blocks follow the same straight lines as the water. Built-up areas therefore sit within a larger, carefully ordered landscape.
