Jolo is the capital of Sulu province and the main town of the island that shares its name. It sits on the northern coast, where a harbour opens to the Sulu Sea. For centuries Jolo was the seat of the Sultanate of Sulu, a maritime power whose trade reached across the southern Philippines, Borneo and beyond.
