Karak City occupies a steep-sided plateau in southern Jordan, and the terrain dictates its shape. The old town fills the top of the hill, with lanes following the contours, while the ground drops away sharply into wadis on several sides. Newer districts spread along the ridges and roads that climb out of the valleys, so the map has a compact core with arms reaching outward.
At the southern tip of the old town stands Kerak Castle, one of the largest Crusader castles in the Levant, built in the twelfth century and later strengthened under Ayyubid and Mamluk rule. The town also lies on the historic King's Highway, the ancient route running north to south along the Jordanian highlands.
