Karuva lies in Kollam district in southern Kerala, on the low coastal plain north of Kollam city. Like much of this part of the state, it has no sharp boundary between town and countryside. The map shows an unbroken spread of houses along lanes and small roads, interrupted by ponds, paddy fields and the dense cover of coconut palms.
Water is never far away. The branching inlets of Ashtamudi Lake, one of Kerala's large backwater systems, reach into the district nearby, and the Arabian Sea coast runs a few kilometres to the west.
