Kashira lies in the south of Moscow Oblast, on the Oka River, one of the major rivers of central Russia. The town sits on the high bank above the water, and its map is shaped by the wide river bend and the roads and railway that cross it toward Tula and Ryazan.
Kashira is known for its power station, one of the first built under the GOELRO electrification plan in the early 1920s. Its presence helped shape the town's later development, and districts grew around both the historic centre and the industrial area.
