Ké-Macina sits on the bank of the Niger River in Mali's Ségou region, downstream from Ségou where the river begins to spread into its broad inner delta. The name Macina, also written Massina, is carried by the wider region along the Niger. It was the heartland of the nineteenth-century Massina Empire founded by Seku Amadu.
