Khān Yūnis is the principal city of the southern Gaza Strip, lying a short distance inland from the Mediterranean shore. Its map shows a close-knit centre where older streets gather, surrounded by broader blocks and, toward the west, a camp and neighbourhoods reaching out to the sandy coastal strip. Farmland and greenhouses have traditionally ringed the outskirts of the city.
The city grew around a fortified caravanserai built in the late fourteenth century under the Mamluks, a stop on the route between Egypt and Syria.
