Tokoro River
The river flows through the basin close to the city centre. On the map its curves soften the straight lines of the grid and give the design a natural focal line.

Kitami Map Poster & Print
Kitami lies in the Okhotsk region of eastern Hokkaido, in a broad basin crossed by the Tokoro River. The central area follows a regular grid, typical of towns planned during the settlement of Hokkaido, and it sits along the river and the railway. Around it, large rectangular fields stretch out towards forested hills.
The area became known in the early twentieth century as a major producer of peppermint, and for a time Kitami was one of the world's leading sources of mint oil. Today it is known for its onions, grown on a large scale in the surrounding fields. Winters here are long and cold, with some of Hokkaido's lowest temperatures.
A Kitami map poster shows the order of a planned northern town: a straight grid, the river bending through it and the patchwork of farmland all around. In monochrome, the rectangular fields add a quiet rhythm around the edges of the frame.

Settlement grid
Central Kitami is laid out in regular blocks with long straight streets. The pattern reflects its origins as a planned Hokkaido settlement and reads clearly in black and white.
Field patchwork
Beyond the town, large rectangular fields cover the basin floor. They form a striking geometric texture that fills the outer parts of the poster.

Kitami is a place of open skies, cold winters and fields that stretch to the hills. For people who grew up there or spent time in eastern Hokkaido, a map of the town brings that landscape indoors.
