Kokomo Map Poster & Print
Kokomo, the seat of Howard County in north-central Indiana, is laid out on the square grid typical of Midwestern towns. From above, the streets run almost exactly north-south and east-west, and the blocks around the courthouse square are small and regular. Beyond the edge of town the grid carries on as section roads across flat farmland, so the city's boundary blurs into the surveyed land around it.
The one line that refuses the grid is Wildcat Creek. It winds from east to west through the city, and its bends are lined with parks and green space that break up the rows of blocks. Large industrial sites, many tied to the automotive industry, appear as broad open shapes toward the edges of town, while highway bypasses mark its outer ring.
Kokomo calls itself the City of Firsts. In 1894 the inventor Elwood Haynes tested one of the earliest American gasoline automobiles on a road just outside town, and the city later became a centre for car parts and transmissions.
