Kondopoga Map Poster & Print
Kondopoga lies in the Republic of Karelia, at the head of a long, narrow bay on the north-western shore of Lake Onega. From above, the town stretches along the water. Its streets rise from the shore toward the forest, and the lake's edge breaks into coves and points that make the coastline unusually intricate.
The town grew in the twentieth century around a hydroelectric station and a large pulp and paper mill, which still dominates the waterfront. For centuries the village here was also known for its wooden Church of the Dormition, a tall tent-roofed church on the shore that was lost to fire in 2018. The Kivach waterfall, one of the best-known in Karelia, lies not far away.
