Kukës Map Poster & Print
Kukës lies in northeastern Albania, close to the borders with Kosovo and North Macedonia. The old town stood at the confluence of the White Drin and the Black Drin, but in the 1970s the construction of the Fierza hydroelectric dam flooded the valley, and a new town was built on higher ground overlooking the water.
The result is an unusually distinctive town map: a planned settlement set on a promontory, with the reservoir wrapping around it in long, branching arms. Behind it rises Mount Gjallica, whose steep slopes give the map a strong sense of relief even when drawn only in simple lines.
In 1999 Kukës received hundreds of thousands of refugees from Kosovo, and its residents were widely recognised for their hospitality during that crisis.
