Latina Map Poster & Print
Latina lies on the flat Pontine plain south of Rome, and its centre is one of the clearest examples of a planned town in Italy. Streets radiate from a central square in straight lines, crossed by ring roads that form concentric outlines. Outside the core, a network of straight drainage canals and farm roads extends across the plain to the coast.
The city was founded in 1932 as Littoria, part of the reclamation of the Pontine Marshes, which turned malarial wetland into farmland with new towns and a system of canals. It was renamed Latina after the Second World War. Its coast includes Lido di Latina and a chain of lagoons near the Circeo National Park.
