Lepaera lies in the Lempira department of western Honduras, in mountainous country where towns sit in valleys and on ridges between steep, wooded slopes. From above, its centre forms a small, regular grid of streets around a central plaza, following the colonial pattern common to the region, while roads and tracks climb out of town towards hamlets scattered across the hills.
The municipality is largely rural, and much of its population lives in villages spread across its territory. Coffee is the main crop in the surrounding highlands, grown on smallholdings on steep ground, and agriculture sets both the look of the landscape and the rhythm of the year, with the harvest bringing the busiest months to the town and its roads.
