Léré lies in the Mayo-Kebbi Ouest province of southwestern Chad, close to the border with Cameroon. Its setting is shaped by water: the town sits by Lake Léré, one of a chain of lakes along the Mayo Kebbi river system, which links this part of Chad toward the Benue basin. Léré is also the historic seat of the Moundang kingdom, whose ruler, the Gong of Léré, remains an important traditional authority in the region.
