Lermontov lies in Stavropol Krai, in the Caucasian Mineral Waters region, close to Pyatigorsk. The town sits at the foot of Mount Beshtau, whose several peaks rise directly above it. The map shows a compact, planned layout of residential blocks and straight streets, with forested slopes of the mountain pressing close on one side.
The town was founded in the early 1950s in connection with uranium mining in the surrounding mountains. It was named after the poet Mikhail Lermontov, whose life and death are closely linked with nearby Pyatigorsk. Today it is part of the wider cluster of spa towns and settlements around Beshtau.
