Líbano lies in the north of Tolima department, on the eastern slopes of Colombia's Central Cordillera. The town stands at a mid-mountain altitude where the climate suits coffee, and the surrounding countryside is a patchwork of farms on steep ground, cut by streams and small valleys.
The town was founded in the nineteenth century during the period of settlement that spread coffee farming across the Andean slopes of central Colombia. Its centre follows the usual Colombian pattern of a grid around a main square, adapted here to uneven terrain on a mountain spur.
