Luxembourg City is built on a sandstone plateau that the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers have carved into sheer valleys. On a map this produces an unusual pattern: a dense old core perched on high ground, green gorges wrapping around it like a moat, and tight clusters of streets in the lower quarters of Grund, Clausen and Pfaffenthal at the foot of the cliffs.
Bridges are central to the city's shape. The stone arches of the Adolphe Bridge span the Pétrusse valley toward the station district in the south. To the east, the red Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge leaps across to the Kirchberg plateau. There, a planned layout of wide avenues holds European institutions, including the Court of Justice of the European Union, alongside offices and cultural buildings.
The remains of the fortress, once among the strongest in Europe, were inscribed with the old quarters as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, including the Bock promontory and the tunnels carved into its rock.
