Macerata stands on a hill between the valleys of the Potenza and the Chienti, a few kilometres inland from the Adriatic. From above, its historic centre is a compact oval of lanes and piazzas enclosed within the line of its old walls. Newer districts spread down the slopes and along the ridges, following the roads that leave the old gates.
The town is home to one of Italy's oldest universities, with origins in the thirteenth century, and to the Sferisterio, a large neoclassical arena originally built for a ball game and now used for a well-known summer opera festival. Macerata is also the birthplace of Matteo Ricci, the Jesuit who travelled to China in the sixteenth century.
