Mahanje is a settlement in the Ruvuma region of southern Tanzania, in the upland country north-west of the regional centre, Songea. It is a small, largely rural place, and the map shows it that way: a handful of roads, clusters of buildings along them, and a large area of farmland and open ground in between.
