Mahébourg Map Poster & Print
Mahébourg is on the south-east coast of Mauritius, on the shore of the wide bay of Grand Port. The French founded it in the early nineteenth century and named it after Mahé de La Bourdonnais, the island's eighteenth-century governor. Its planned origins still show on the map: a regular grid of streets running down to a waterfront promenade on the lagoon.
The bay itself is the site of the Battle of Grand Port in 1810, one of the few French naval victories of the Napoleonic Wars, fought among the reefs and islets offshore. Today the waters in front of the town are shallow lagoon, sheltered by a coral reef, with small islands scattered across them.
