Mananjary lies on the east coast of Madagascar, where the Mananjary River reaches the Indian Ocean. The town occupies a thin band of land between the sea and the Canal des Pangalanes. The canal is a long chain of lagoons and cut channels that runs parallel to much of the island's eastern shore. On a map, water frames the town on almost every side.
The streets follow the coast in long, slightly curving lines, crossed by shorter lanes running from lagoon to beach.
