Mansfield Map Poster & Print
Mansfield grew as a market town near the old royal hunting grounds of Sherwood Forest, and its map still has a market town at its heart. Streets radiate from the central market place in several directions. The tight, irregular pattern of the old centre contrasts with the more regular estates that spread outward during the coal-mining era.
The most striking man-made line is the railway viaduct, which carries the line in a long curve through the town centre on tall stone arches. It dominates many local views. The small River Maun also runs through town, followed by strips of green space. On the map it shows as a soft, winding thread among the terraces and estates.
Past the built-up edge, the map opens into woodland and former colliery land, much of it now reclaimed as country parks. What remains of Sherwood Forest lies to the north-east.
